From the classroom and playground to sports days, excursions and school camps, emergencies do not always happen near the first aid room. VIH provides practical, engaging training that helps education staff respond calmly and confidently wherever students are learning.

The first aid room isn’t always nearby
Asthma emergency kits may also be needed for yard duty, sports days, excursions and camps—not only in the school office. Victorian Department of Education

Every camp and excursion is different
A student’s anaphylaxis risk should be considered for each individual camp or excursion, including staff training, communication and access to medication. Victorian Department of Education

Children may describe symptoms differently
Younger students may say their throat feels “funny,” their tongue feels “furry,” or they feel dizzy instead of clearly identifying an allergic reaction or breathing difficulty.

Training needs to match the activity
A classroom, swimming carnival, science laboratory and overnight camp do not present the same risks. Training should reflect where staff work and what students do.

School camps and excursions

Before leaving, consider:

• Who are the trained first aiders?

• Are asthma and anaphylaxis kits immediately accessible?

• Is the first aid kit suitable for the activity and location?

• Is mobile reception available?

• How far away are emergency services?

• Are student medical and emergency plans current?

• Does everyone know the exact campsite, venue or track location?
